There's been a major setback for the internet. The European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee (25 MEPs) voted in favour for Article 11 "link tax" and Article 13 "censorship machine" of the EU Copyright Directive. Furthermore, the committee voted against nearly all measures that would attempt to grant more rights to users such as commonsense limitations and user-generated content.

However, the fight is not over yet. Some other steps must be taken before the Directive can be fully adopted. Further negotiations have to happen, and there's a chance that the debate will occur in a larger forum and for the proposal to be changed. The next vote related to this is apparently likely to happen on 2018.07.04(Wed).

It seems that, for now, the EU is safe from the controversial copyright reform. However, the Directive will be open to amendments and voting again, likely to be at the next session on 2018.09.13.

With bitter irony, several articles and campaign sites that criticise EU copyright reforms were censored from the Google search engine. This is just the start of new attacks on freedom of expression in the name of enforcing copyright.

The EU Copyright Directive reforms currently being considered, such as Article 11's "link tax" and Article 13's "censorship machine", freedom of expression and democracy will take more hits. On 2018.09.12(Wed), the EU Parliament will vote one more time on whether to force internet platforms to install upload filters.

If you will be in the EU on 2018.08.26(Sun), join the Europe-wide protests!
