Like @Gerhard Hallstein I would like to know what this means for laypeople, like me.

For example, does it mean that the most discussed desired user improvements (e.g. ability to edit after posting) will be easier to implement by developers?

@Roy Gardiner it means that third party programs, for example the Dandelion android application, will be able to access diaspora* data programmatically. So, it is now possible for someone who wants a totally different interface for diaspora* to write one. Or for someone who wants to integrate diaspora* posts in something bigger to mix it with other content to do it, too.

It won't help for the specific use case of post editing, which lies in the internal of diaspora*.

Nice to hear that this finally happened.

@Roy Gardiner, it will be possible to write applications for Diaspora. Right now all apps basically just display Diaspora web page with a few extra bells and whistles.

Absence of decent mobile app is quite a hindrance. Now it will be possible to create one.

As for everything else: basically API just allows programs to do things that users do manually. So expect all kinds of third party automations to be more available: bots posting to and from Diaspora, statistics (active users, trending tags, etc), content processing (e.g. "delete all my posts older than one year", "find my posts containing this".

It won't allow to do anything that isn't built Diaspora already though. If you can't do it manually API can't do it too.

I am not a developer so basically I don't know how what I am reading on my laptop screen is produced. It seems from what you said that I am merely looking at a diaspora* website. If I continue to use pluspora as I have been doing hitherto I guess there will be little or no change evident to me.

FYI, the only manual changes that at I have made are:
- to add that Style add-on to Firefox that allows me to to see 3 columns, rather than just one. That is useful but it does have a shortcoming in that some of the text modifier icons are lost. I have to revert to single-colum view to recover them.
- to add the Easyshare Firefox add-on. That is wonderfully useful!

Nur Programmierer wissen was eine API ist und für die ist dieses Posting ja gedacht, wie viele andere hier ja auch ausgeführt haben...

Dann wären sie hier auch nicht richtig, wenn Diaspora von Franzosen oder Spaniern oder Japanern gebaut wird und die in deren Sprachen reden. Facebook ist vielleicht besser für sie. Für mich nicht.

+1 , Hope everyone realise that this was a very complicated job which involved many things. Happy that we finally can use clients with their full potential especially on #mobile apps, they can get #notifications

@Roy Gardiner, if you like to look at photos a lot then I also can recommend Imagus addon (available for Firefox and Chrome). Basically it automatically blows up photos when you point cursor at them (I also set option to activate it on Ctrl pressed, not just pointing). It saves time and also sometimes photos in the stream are unlickable and can't be easily zoomed. This is pretty convenient.

Also works on most other sites not just on Diaspora :)

Ich finde nicht dass es für nicht Entwickler nicht wichtig ist. Die Endanwenderin kann z.b. bessere Anwendungen fürs Smartphone bekommen, die Benachrichtigungen etc. unterstützen können etc. Könnte man durchaus einfach erklären im Gegensatz zum Leben im Elfenbeinturm.

I hope this will let me ditch JS for good. Last time I checked logging in and changing account settings worked fine in a text browser, the only thing that needed JS was the stream itself.
