Succes!

    Diaspora is a great place for privacy advocates, Linux users, anarchists, atheists (or others with unusual views about religions), amateur photographers, etc.

    What is Messianic? Calvinist (like the Reformed Church)? (You said you were Dutch.)

    Following Wikipedia are about 50% of no religion. 24% are roman-catholic, 15% belong to the protestant religions, 5% are muslim. 6% are Jewish, buddhist, hindu etc.

    Astonishing, isn' t it?

    @David
    Yes, and this is my church:
    Manheim Mennonite Church

    No, seriously, with Messianic I mean the group of people who know God as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and do believe that Jesus is the Messiah. We value the regulations of the Torah and accept the salvation by Jesus.

    Christianity in general has lost its connection with the Jewish roots. Most Christians have created their own celebrations like Christmas and Easter. We celebrate the traditional Jewish feasts like Pesach and Sukkot.

    The Messianic conviction started when Jesus (or Yeshua, for that is his Hebrew name) started preaching. He was a Jew living the Jewish Torah and while bringing salvation, he has always tought us to hold on to the Torah. So that is what the first Christians did and that is what we as Messianic community do.

    Well this is an issue we do not have common. But I am sure that in the Diaspora will be able to maintain an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect.

    Being a happy atheist I am quite optimistic about this.

    @Menno Manheim

    So you are Menno Manheim, and your church is the Manheim Mennonite Church. That can not be a coincidence. Are you the preacher?

    Your church is in the traditional American home of Mennonites and other Anabaptists, but your profile page says you live in Lelystad, which is in the middle of the Netherlands. This seems anomalous.

    I associate the Netherlands with Calvinism, but Menno Simons was actually born in what is now part of the Netherlands, right? The theology of the Anabaptists seems more humane to me than that of the Calvinists.

    I should add that, like @(((Dirk Weber))), I'm also an atheist, but I still take an interest in other people's views.

    By the time I was in my 30s, Protestants here in the United States started to embrace (in my opinion) another religion. This other religion is usually called conservatism, but it's closer, I think, to the "Objectivism" of Ayn Rand (author of The Virtue of Selfishness). The Objectivists (to me) seem as inhumane as the Calvinists.

    I've written elsewhere that "conservatism" is less about traditional morality, and more about keeping the traditional social order, where those on top now remain on top.

    What do you think?

  • (((Dirk Weber)))
    (((Dirk Weber)))
    2020-08-30

    It is rather usual to associate The Netherlands with calvinism, and this surely was true in the past. But things have changed a bit. As I wrote above there are much more roman catholics in The Netherlands than other religions and people who do not regard themselves as religious are nearly 50 per cent of the population.

    Well you cannot say that The Netherlands are a roman catholic society nowadays, but the domination of calvinism is history.

    Why should Menno not follow a religion which has its roots in the US, or at least its most followers?
